The Ronald McDonald House of Danville provides a “home-away-from-home” for families of children who are hospitalized or receiving outpatient care at local hospitals. Since 1981, the House has been a place of comfort and stability offering families the opportunity to be together as a family during a time of great uncertainty.
Thanks to the Ronald McDonald House, families no longer need to sleep in hospital waiting rooms or lobbies, nor do they incur the extra financial burden associated with lodging and meals. There is a suggested donation of $15 per night, per family, however no one is ever turned away for their inability to make a contribution. On average, 44% of those that stay with us are unable to make a donation. If the House did not provide resources, the actual cost for two people for laundry, lodging and meals per day is over $250 a day.
The Ronald McDonald House of Danville established and continues to sponsor the first summer camp for children coping with cancer. Celebrating its 36th year in 2018, Camp Dost offers a place for these special children to recapture childhood fun and enjoy activities that may have been denied them by their disease. Camp activities range from swimming and fishing to arts and crafts. Campers benefit from the shared camaraderie among each other and the volunteers, and often make lasting friendships. Thanks to the support of generous donors, the cost to campers is nothing.
In 2017, the Ronald McDonald House of Danville opened the Ronald McDonald Family Room inside Geisinger’s Janet Weis Children’s Hospital. The Family Room is a comforting haven for families of critically ill children. Being just steps away, the Family Room offers a quiet space for families to rest and regroup while their child is being cared for just down the hall. Extending the support of the House into the hospital setting, the Room offers a kitchenette, a living room area, a quiet room, a napping room and two sleep rooms with a full bathroom.
